Holiday Traditions

In our religion we celebrate our New Year in April. On this day, it is our custom to wake up early and to wear new traditional clothes. It is also a tradition to prepare a special food item including all the tastes of sweet, sour, bitter, salty to represent our how our future year would be filled with happiness, bitterness, sadness and some memorable events. This festival is known as Ugadi and is celebrated by all South Indians. It is a special day to remember.

My Family

Having friends or toys to play with, winning prizes, gaining gifts from others, are not the most important details of my life. If anything, it would be my family. My parents are very kind, helpful and organized. I love them very much for their importance and the attention they give to me and my sisters. My mother never made mistakes in any plans. Not for vacations. Not for trips, journeys. Not for anything, until when we were at airport waiting for the flight to arrive in an airport in India.                                                                                                                                           “Mom we’re here!” I screamed.
“Calm down, now help me with these bags,” my mother answered, rather softly, in a voice of tiredness.
The bags were very heavy. Even with that heaviness in my hand, I was able to run with them. My face only showed the feeling of excitement in me, unlike my mom, who was very tired of the flight. She hated flights. It made her feel sick.
“Mom, come on! I see dad,” I said. With that, excitement and happiness entered her body.                                                                                                                                                I could read her face. It clearly told that she wanted to know where he was. That made me smile. She started to look around her. She found him. He stood straight ahead, waiting for us in the freezing cold.I was already there with my dad yelling at the top of my voice, after my mom and my sisters. The way I yelled got everyone’s attention. I did not care, though. After, what seemed like an hour, my sisters and my mother arrived joining my dad and me. I could see that it was cold outside. I could see the fog covering all the cars’ windows, from the airport’s window. We were in our car, all back together, enjoying the drive home.                                                                                                          During the two days, I could remember when we almost missed our flight. It all started when we were waiting at the terminal gate two. I was holding the boarding passes until I looked at them and realized that we were to board at the gate 22. We only had ten minutes until our flight arrived. It was a long way through the whole airport. However, the good thing was that we saw the whole airport. Luckily, we did manage to get on the flight. After the long run in the airport, we were all sleeping during the whole flight. Therefore, we arrived in America after the long days.                                                                                                                    We found our dad straight ahead, outside, shivering. He was waiting anxiously. The moment we all saw each other, our faces glowed from the tiredness to happiness.                                                                                                                   During the drive home, my sisters told my dad about the mistake we did in the airport. I was surprised that he did not seem surprised, he was just happy that we were with him. Although I did not listen to the whole story, I saw my dad laughing. I was looking outside the window, surprised at how fast a whole year had gone by, without him. A new year laid in front of me for a new start. Although I cannot see or tell future, I had a feeling for it to be special.
